Donnie Yen, born Donnie Yen Chi-tan, is the son of Bow-sim Mark, a renowned kung fu master, and Kylster Yen, a newspaper editor and amateur musician. His family moved to Hong Kong when he was two, and later to Boston, Massachusetts, when he was 11, where his mother established the Chinese Wushu Research Institute. 

This multicultural upbringing, coupled with his fluency in Cantonese, English, and some Japanese, has shaped his global appeal.

Yen’s journey in martial arts began as soon as he could walk, trained by his mother in Tai Chi and other traditional Chinese martial arts. 

At 14, he dropped out of school to focus on wushu, moving to Beijing for intensive training, which included Japanese karate, Korean taekwondo, and Western boxing. His film career started in Hong Kong as a stuntman and extra, with his first starring role in “Drunk Tai Chi” (1984), directed by Yuen Woo-ping, marking his entry into action cinema.

His breakthrough came in 1992 with the role of General Nap-lan in “Once Upon a Time in China II,” opposite Jet Li, showcasing his acting and martial arts skills. International recognition followed with “Shanghai Knights” (2003), co-starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson, and “Flash Point” (2007), which won him Best Action Choreography at the 44th Golden Horse Awards and the Hong Kong Film Awards.
