She has a sister, Vanessa Johansson, who is also an actress, a brother Adrian, a twin brother Hunter Johansson (born three minutes after her), and a paternal half-brother, Christian.
Johansson began acting during childhood, after her mother started taking her to auditions. She made her professional acting debut at the age of eight in the off-Broadway production of “Sophistry” with Ethan Hawke at New York’s Playwrights Horizons.
Despite facing early rejections for commercials, she made her film debut at age nine as John Ritter’s character’s daughter in the fantasy comedy North (1994).
Following minor roles in Just Cause (1995) and If Lucy Fell (1996), she played the role of Amanda in Manny & Lo (1996). Her performance garnered a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Lead Female and positive reviews. She gained early recognition for her roles in The Horse Whisperer (1998) and Ghost World (2001).
Her shift to adult roles came in 2003 with Lost in Translation, for which she won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress. This breakthrough performance, alongside her role in Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003), established her as one of Hollywood’s most promising young talents. She continued to gain praise for playing a troubled teenager in A Love Song for Bobby Long (2004) and a struggling actress in Match Point (2005).
Johansson collaborated extensively with director Woody Allen, appearing in Match Point (2005), Scoop (2006), and Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008). In 2010, she debuted on Broadway in a revival of A View from the Bridge, which won her a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress, and began portraying Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Iron Man 2.
She reprised the Black Widow role in eight films, most recently in her solo feature Black Widow (2021), gaining global recognition for her performances. During this period, she also starred in critically acclaimed science fiction films Her (2013), Under the Skin (2013), and Lucy (2014).
She received two simultaneous Academy Award nominations, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, for her roles in Marriage Story (2019) and Jojo Rabbit (2019), becoming one of the few actors to achieve this feat.
In 2025, Johansson continues to showcase her versatility. She stars in Jurassic World Rebirth, fulfilling a lifelong dream after trying to get into the franchise for over 15 years. She also appeared in The Phoenician Scheme, her third Wes Anderson project, and made her directorial debut with Eleanor the Great, which earned a five-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival.
