Name: Kapil Sharma
Profession: Comedian, television host, actor, producer, singer
Born: April 2, 1981 (Amritsar, Punjab, India)

Biography:

Kapil Sharma, born Kapil Punj on April 2, 1981, in Amritsar, Punjab, emerged from a middle-class Punjabi family with no background in the entertainment industry. His father, Jeetendra Kumar Punj, served as a head constable in the Punjab Police until his passing due to cancer in 2004, and his mother Janak Rani is a homemaker.

He grew up alongside his elder brother Ashok, who is also in the police force, and elder sister Pooja. From an early age, Kapil showed a passion for performance arts and singing, attending Shri Ram Ashram Senior Secondary School and later college at Hindu College, Amritsar, and Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar.

Kapil’s rise to fame began with his participation in the comedy reality show The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2007, which he won, earning widespread acclaim and a cash prize that jumpstarted his career.

Prior to this, he performed on regional Punjabi television with Hasde Hasande Ravo. His uniquely relatable style, quick wit, and charming stage presence rapidly made him a household name in India and among the diaspora.

He gained enormous popularity as the host and star of Comedy Nights with Kapil on Colors TV, which aired from 2013 to early 2016 and became one of the most-watched comedy shows in the country.

Following that, under his own banner K9 Productions, he launched The Kapil Sharma Show on Sony TV in April 2016, which received a positive response for its blend of celebrity interviews and comedic sketches. The show has had multiple seasons and remains a flagship comedy program in Indian television.

Aside from television, Kapil ventured into Bollywood with his debut as the lead in Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon (2015), a romantic comedy directed by Abbas-Mustan. He also appeared in Firangi (2017) and produced Son of Manjeet Singh (2018). As a singer, he released his single “Alone” in 2023, demonstrating his multifaceted talent.

Kapil’s career has faced publicized challenges, including health issues related to high blood pressure, struggles with alcohol, and controversies such as on-set absences, disputes with colleagues, and legal cases related to breach of contract and allegations of misconduct.

Despite these setbacks, Kapil Sharma remains an influential figure in Indian entertainment, known for his humor that bridges urban and rural audiences, and for revitalizing stand-up comedy in India.

He is known for his philanthropy, humility, and close-knit family values. Kapil’s marriage to Ginni Chatrath, whom he met during college, is often highlighted for their supportive relationship. Together, they have two children, and Kapil frequently shares moments from their family life with his fans in a modest manner.

Kapil Sharma is acknowledged as one of India’s most successful comedians and television hosts, earning numerous awards, including the Indian Television Academy Awards and the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year (Entertainer category).

He continues to be one of the highest-paid personalities in Indian television, commanding millions per episode of his show, and owns luxurious properties, including a signature apartment in Mumbai and a farmhouse near Chandigarh.
