Kamal Haasan is a legendary Indian actor, filmmaker, writer, playback singer, and politician, acclaimed for his immense contributions to Indian, especially Tamil, cinema. Born into a Tamil Iyengar family, Haasan began as a child actor in Kalathur Kannamma (1960), earning the President’s Gold Medal at age six.

In his youth, he trained in classical dance and became known for his versatility, pushing the boundaries of conventional film roles and scripts.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Kamal evolved into a bankable lead actor, working with renowned directors like K. Balachander. Films such as Moondram Pirai (1982), where he portrayed an amnesiac caring for a woman with retrograde amnesia, and Nayakan (1987), a gangster epic later named by TIME as one of the top 100 films of all time, showcased his acting prowess.

His career is defined by a willingness to experiment with genres and take on unconventional or challenging roles, performing in multiple Indian languages.

Kamal is celebrated for pioneering several new techniques in Indian cinema, like prosthetic make-up and high-concept storytelling. Notable works include Apoorva Sagodharargal (1989), where he played multiple roles, Indian (1996), a vigilante thriller with social commentary, and Dasavathaaram (2008), in which he played ten distinct characters.

In 2018, Kamal entered active politics by founding the party Makkal Needhi Maiam, aiming to bring reform to Tamil Nadu’s political scene. Despite his political commitments, Haasan remains actively involved in cinema, continuing to act, direct, and produce.
