Description:

Chandu Champion is a 2024 Indian Hindi-language biographical sports drama film directed by Kabir Khan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. The film tells the inspiring true story of Murlikant Petkar, India’s first Paralympic gold medalist who overcame tremendous odds to achieve sporting glory.

Shot across various locations in India, London, and Germany, the film marks the first collaboration between Kabir Khan and Kartik Aaryan, with the latter undergoing a remarkable physical transformation and rigorous training to portray the athlete. The film celebrates the human spirit’s resilience while highlighting a lesser-known Indian sports hero.

Plot:

The film opens with Murlikant Petkar, nicknamed “Chandu,” as a young boy from a humble background in Maharashtra who displays extraordinary swimming talent. Despite limited resources and opportunities, his natural abilities catch the attention of local coaches, and he eventually joins the Indian Army, where his athletic prowess flourishes further.

The narrative takes a dramatic turn when Chandu is deployed during the 1965 Indo-Pak war, where he sustains severe injuries from enemy gunfire. The bullet wounds leave him paralyzed and seemingly end his promising athletic career.

Facing medical discharge from the army and grappling with depression, Chandu struggles to find purpose in his new reality.

The film poignantly portrays his rehabilitation journey, highlighting both the physical challenges and the societal indifference toward disability in 1960s India. With the support of his mother, a dedicated coach who believes in his potential, and his own indomitable will, Chandu refuses to surrender to circumstances.

He redirects his athletic focus, training rigorously despite his physical limitations. The narrative showcases his determination through grueling training montages and intimate moments of self-doubt that he ultimately overcomes. Despite facing institutional apathy and lack of support for para-athletes, Chandu qualifies for the 1972 Summer Paralympics in Heidelberg, Germany.

The conclusion depicts the irony of his return to India without official recognition, contrasting his international achievement with the lack of awareness about Paralympic sports in his home country.

Yet, the film ends on a hopeful note, showing how his pioneering achievement eventually helped pave the way for future generations of Indian para-athletes.
